During the meeting, President Jiang delivered speeches on Sino-US relations, the Taiwan issue, China's development prospects and other issues and answered questions from the guests. Regarding Sino-US relations, Jiang Zemin said: The current difficulties facing Sino-US relations are caused by the United States allowing Lee Teng-hui to visit the United States. Prior to this incident, we had repeatedly made clear to the United States our firm opposition to Lee Teng-hui's visit to the United States. The United States also told us on April 17 that if Lee Teng-hui visits the United States, even if it is a private visit, it will violate the "one China" policy adopted by the U.S. government. But not long after, the White House suddenly announced that Lee Teng-hui's private visit to the United States was also in line with the policy of the U.S. government. This is what China people cannot understand most. The 1.2 billion people in China are very sensitive to the Taiwan issue. After hearing this, they can only believe that the U.S. authorities 'confused statements on this issue are a manifestation of hegemony, and can also be said to have turned a cloud into a cloud and turned a cloud into rain. China has been deeply bullied by foreign powers for more than 100 years. Including people of my age, we have a clear understanding of China's modern history and the eight-year War of Resistance, and we still remember the era of bullying. After the founding of New China, the era of being slaughtered by others is gone forever. Therefore, to overcome the difficulties in the relations between the two countries, it is natural that the United States needs to take measures to eliminate the serious consequences caused by Lee Teng-hui's visit to the United States. We have noticed that the United States has repeatedly stated that it will abide by the three Sino-US joint communiqués, pursue the "one China" policy, and handle its relations with Taiwan within this scope, oppose the propositions of "two China" and "one China, one Taiwan", oppose Taiwan's independence, and oppose Taiwan's accession to the United Nations. We make positive comments on this. We have also noticed that the United States has expressed its recognition of the sensitivity and seriousness of incidents such as Lee Teng-hui's visit to the United States and will strictly restrict them in the future. We believe that this statement by the United States is not enough. The key is that the US side abides by the principles of the three Sino-US joint communiques in practical actions, earnestly fulfills its solemn commitments, wins the trust of the China people, and gradually returns Sino-US relations to a healthy and stable track. Regarding the Taiwan issue, Jiang Zemin said that the Taiwan issue is China's internal affair. On January 30 this year, I expressed eight opinions on how to achieve reunification. We still advocate the policy of "peaceful reunification, one country, two systems". What we oppose are "two China","one China, one Taiwan" and Taiwan independence. We are not committed to renouncing the use of force. We have made up our mind. In the event of a situation of splitting the motherland, whether it is international hostile forces from abroad or separatist forces in Taiwan itself, we may inevitably use non-peaceful methods. Of course, we definitely don't want a day like this. As I have already said in my eight-point opinion, China does not fight China. We welcome leaders of the Taiwan authorities to visit in an appropriate capacity; we are also willing to accept Taiwan's invitation and go to Taiwan. We handle the affairs of China ourselves and do not need to resort to any international occasions. Any issue can be discussed, except "two China","one China, one Taiwan" and Taiwan independence. The problem now is that Lee Teng-hui visited the United States in June 1995 and vigorously advocated "two China,""one China, one Taiwan" and Taiwan independence internationally, undermining the foundation of cross-Strait relations. In short, only under the "one China" principle can meetings between leaders of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait be meaningful. Regarding the development prospects of China, President Jiang said: Not long ago, we just held the Fifth Plenary Session of the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, adopted the "Ninth Five-Year Plan" for national economic and social development and proposals for long-term goals for 2010, and drew a grand cross-century blueprint for realizing national prosperity and national rejuvenation. Our party is more united and strong, and its leadership over economic and social development has become more mature. We have the confidence and ability to bring a China with sustained economic development, comprehensive social progress, and full of vitality and hope into the 21st century. After 10 and 15 years of hard work, my country's social productivity will have a great development and its comprehensive national strength will be greatly enhanced. A prosperous and prosperous China is an important force in maintaining world peace and promoting the development of human progress. It will play a more active role in establishing a new international order that is peaceful, stable, just and reasonable. Our country has more than 100 years of suffering experience of being invaded and oppressed. Even if China becomes strong in the future, it will not pose a threat to other countries, invade and oppress other countries. Under any circumstances, we will never seek hegemony.
