January 31, 1942 The Japanese army entered Manila
On this day, 83 years ago, on January 31, 1942 (December 15, 1941 in the lunar calendar), the Japanese army entered Manila. MacArthur and Quezon commanded the battle on Corregidor Island On January 31, 1942, the Japanese Navy and Air Force continued to attack U.S. and Philippine forces in the Philippines. General MacArthur has been forced to evacuate Manila. But Japanese General Masaharu cannot yet declare that he has won the victory. His navy was not yet able to enter Manila Bay because MacArthur still held Fort Creshido on the island, and he established a line of defense across the bay from Manila on the Batan Peninsula. The Japanese move forward clearly worries the Americans. Just like Major General Jonason. As Wainwright pointed out: "Rats will not be peaceful in the room." Occupying Crejido and Batan was not an easy task for the Japanese, but their blockade of Manila caused great trouble for General MacArthur, and many of his soldiers were sick and hungry. MacArthur and Philippine President Quezon retreated to Coregidor Island in the Bay of Manila, where they continued to command the US-Philippine coalition forces fighting on the Bataan Peninsula.
