On December 24, 1980, Bokasa, the former tyrant of Central Africa, was sentenced to death
On this day, 45 years ago, on December 24, 1980 (November 18, 1980 in the lunar calendar), Central African emperor Bokassa was sentenced to death for profligacy and inhumanity and stealing human flesh. The arrogant Central African emperor Bokassa "Get out of the way, the car is coming!" On the street of Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, a woman pulls her child to dodge a car far away from them. Why is she so afraid of cars? It turned out that decades ago, when the Central African Emperor Bokassa was in power, his royal motorcade often went on a rampage, and pedestrians deserved to be killed or damaged. So people quickly hid after seeing the car. Over time, a tradition formed and continues to this day. Through this incident, Bokassa's cruelty can be seen. So what kind of person is he? Jean Bedell Bokassa was born in 1921 into a wealthy chieftain family in Central Africa. He had a rude character since he was a child, and he was very fierce when he fought. Sometimes he was beaten until his skin was torn open without even crying out in pain. After graduating from high school, Bokassa was sent to the French army by his grandfather (Central Africa was a French colony at that time). In the battle, Bokassa made many military achievements, won more than 10 medals, and was promoted to captain officer. In 1963, three years after the Central African Republic's independence, France supported Bokassa as commander-in-chief of the Central African Armed Forces in order to continue to control the former colony. The following year, Bokassa was promoted to Minister of Defense and became a popular military strongman at the time. But he didn't care about the title of Defense Minister at all. He wanted to seize greater power. After some conspiracy and planning, on New Year's Day 1966, Bokassa launched a coup and ascended the presidency. He also served as Prime Minister of the Republic and Minister of Defense and Justice, gathering power in one place. In 1972, he awarded himself the rank of "Marshal". From then on, Bokassa often dressed in Napoleon-style Marshal uniform and claimed to be the "Napoleon of Central Africa". However, Bokasa felt that being president was far less impressive than Napoleon. I miss it day and night, and I want to be an emperor. Bokassa (right) is with Queen Katrin (left) at the coronation ceremony. On December 4, 1976, Radio from the Central African Republic released important news: Bokassa personally announced that from now on, the "Central African Republic" will be renamed "Central African Empire", and he will be renamed Bokassa I. After Bokasa proclaimed himself emperor, he immediately announced the abolition of the Constitution, closed the National Assembly, and strictly prohibited "uncivilized" etiquette such as kissing, hugging and shaking hands. Bokassa himself was profligate, collecting beautiful women everywhere and marrying 16 wives and concubines. In order to please Bokassa and confront the mainland, the Taiwan authorities at that time also specially gave him a Taiwanese beauty. In order to accumulate wealth, Bokassa transferred all "cash cows" such as airlines, cotton, and coffee trading companies to his own. He often said: "The treasury is mine." He regarded the Ministry of Finance as his bank account and could spend as much as he wanted. This kind of money was not enough. Bokassa issued an order to the school that students must wear uniforms uniformly. The price of each set is equivalent to one month's salary of an ordinary worker. Students who do not buy will be expelled from school. The students couldn't bear it anymore and shouted,"Down with Bokasa! Kill the emperor!" The slogan set off a wave of marches and protests. Faced with the angry students, Bokassa personally commanded the army to suppress it. Blood immediately dyed the streets of Bangui red, and hundreds of students were massacred, many of them children. What is even more sensational is that Bokasa eradicated humanity and stole human flesh. Those who were killed were either smuggled into the palace gardens to feed lions and tigers, or sent to the ice room to be frozen for Bokassa to slowly consume. Bokassa's arbitrariness and brutality finally alienated his relatives. On September 20, 1979, while Bokasa was visiting Libya, former President David Darko launched a coup and overthrew the Bokasa regime. People immediately flocked to the streets of Bangui, and they struggled to push down the bronze statue of Bokassa, stepped on it, and spat to vent their hatred. Bokassa had to go into exile in Paris. However, he still dreams of returning to his country and making a comeback. On December 24, 1980, a court of the Central African Republic sentenced former emperor Bokassa to death after a five-day trial in absentia. On October 22, 1986, Bokassa secretly left Paris with his beloved wife and five children and flew to Bangui, the capital of Central Africa, in an attempt to restore it. However, as soon as he got off the plane, he was arrested by Central African soldiers who had been waiting for a long time. On June 12, 1987, the Criminal Court of the Central African Republic sentenced Bokassa to death after a six-month trial. The court listed a total of 14 counts of the tyrant, mainly assassination, murder, shooting students, hiding corpses, cannibalism and embezzlement of state property. However, then Central African President Kolingba commuted Bokassa's death sentence to life imprisonment, and five years later issued an amnesty order on the grounds of "old and sick", exempting Bokassa from life imprisonment and switching to house arrest. On November 3, 1996, Bokasa died in the hospital of a heart attack, ending his shameful life. Bokassa, decorated with an arrogant bronze eagle, was crowned as the emperor's throne in Bangui
