Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone is located in the northeast of Pudong New District, bordering the Yangtze River Estuary, with a planned area of 10 square kilometers. It is a comprehensive international free trade zone with multiple functions such as bonded warehousing, commodity display and trading, and export processing. The first phase of 6.4 square kilometers has been closed for operation. 3.5 million square meters of commercial and residential buildings, standard factories, display halls and other buildings have been completed and put into use. World-renowned companies such as Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Phillips, IBM, and JVC have invested and built factories here. Waigaoqiao Deepwater Port currently opens 6 international container liner routes in Europe, the Middle East, North America, West Africa, South Africa and the Mediterranean, as well as 20 domestic Yangtze River and coastal cargo routes. The port's external port functions have been continuously strengthened. In 1997, the throughput of Waigaoqiao Port reached 4.76 million tons, and the container loading and unloading volume was 491,000 TEUs.
