When the author studied at Colombia University in the United States, he completed his doctoral thesis "The Evolution of Ancient Chinese Philosophical Methods" in 1917. After returning to China, after a year of updating and revision, it was officially published by the Shanghai Commercial Press in February 1919, titled "Outline of the History of Chinese Philosophy"(Volume 1). The book is divided into 12 chapters. Chapter 1,"Introduction", Chapters 2 to 11, takes characters as the theme and systematically discusses the historical evolution of philosophical thoughts from Lao Tzu to Han Fei. Chapter 12: The End of Ancient Philosophy summarizes the philosophy of this historical period. The author examines ancient China philosophy from the perspective of bourgeois pragmatism, and basically gets rid of the traditional form of Confucian classics in China. It has the historical significance of anti-feudal progress and occupies an important position in the history of the development of philosophical history in China.
