Breaking-News >> TodayHistory August 1, 1895 The Gutian case case occurred
On this day, 130 years ago, on August 1, 1895 (June 11, 1895 in the lunar calendar), the Gutian case case occurred. Portraits of some victims of the "Gutian Case Plan" in Fujian. The Gutian Case Plan was a case plan that occurred in Gutian County, Fujian Province on June 11, the 21st year of Guangxu (August 1, 1895). On the same day, Gutianzhai believers attacked the British missionary Shi Luobo, his wife and children, and other female priests accompanying him, who were summer on Gutianhua Mountain. More than ten people were killed and injured, and two houses were burned down. The Gutian Case Case was the most serious conflict between China and Westerners before the Boxer Rebellion (1899 - 1901). In the history of the Church of China, the only thing comparable to it is the Tianjin Case Case that occurred in 1870. At the time of the incident, Shi Luobo's family and other female priests were sleeping, with only a few children playing outside the door. Eleven people were killed in the riots. Except for Shi Luobo himself, the other victims were all defenceless women or children. Because the thugs later burned the houses and bodies, the details of the massacre were unclear. At that time, many Western media reports on this were mixed: some said that the thugs did not torture the victims before launching the massacre; some said that the thugs were quite ferocious. In addition to torturing them, they finally cut their throats or burned them alive. Only five people survived the Gutian Case Plan, two of whom were Shi Luobo's children: one broke one knee, and the other had one eye blinded. Because the Qing government tried to block the news in advance and did not promptly file a case to arrest and punish the murderer, the United States and the United States accused him of being accomplices and accomplices, and put forward strong protests to exert military pressure. The British and American consuls in Rong jointly organized an investigation team to Gutian and participated in the joint trial. In the end, all the leaders of the Gutianzhai Church were beheaded, dozens of other accomplices were sentenced to life imprisonment and life banishment, and local officials such as Wang Rulin, the magistrate of Gutian County, were dismissed. After the incident, ministers from various countries protested. British warships went to Fujian to demonstrate and organized an investigation team to Gutian. The British and American consuls participated in the joint trial. The Qing government telegraphed Bian Baoquan to "do as required". In the end, 26 people including Liu Xiangxing were killed, 66 people were sentenced to life imprisonment and life banishment, and local official Tang Youde and Gutian magistrate Wang Rulin were dismissed. After the perpetrator was punished, China and Britain closed the case. What is rare is that the injured party did not ask the Qing government for financial compensation, nor did it use it to coerce the benefits of aggression. The "Gutian Case" was a major case in the late Qing Dynasty after the "Tianjin Case". It caused heavy losses without compensation, which surprised the Qing government. China officials and British and American consuls held a joint trial at the scene of the execution of the four leaders of the Gutian Case Case, the missionary's funeral and the victim's cemetery News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/1k3b.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.15-14:15] 访问:76
