On June 1, 2001 (April 10 of the 2001 lunar calendar), King Birendra of Nepal passed away. The Advisory Council of the Royal Palace of Nepal announced on June 2, 2001 that in view of the sudden death of former Nepal King Birendra at the Narayanhiti Palace on the evening of the 1st, Crown Prince Dipendra will succeed as King of Nepal. Talanat Ranabat, head of the investigation committee and Speaker of the House of Commons of Nepal, said at a press conference that the direct perpetrator of the accident was former Crown Prince Dipendra, and the main reason was that he drank too much whiskey that night. Ranabat said that according to a comprehensive investigation into the incident conducted by the Supreme Investigation Committee composed of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal Keshav Upadya and him for more than a week, and verification by forensic doctors and relevant experts, the shooting was indeed committed by Dipendra. He said that over the past week, the investigation committee conducted detailed investigation and verification of the palace scene where the incident occurred, witnesses, relevant medical staff and the guns and bullets used to create the bloodshed, and finally confirmed that it was a man-made accident caused by former Crown Prince Dipendra.
