On this day, 76 years ago, on March 2, 1949 (February 3, 1949 in the lunar calendar), American bombers completed their first flight around the world without landing. On March 2, 1949, a U.S. B·50 bomber "Miss Lucky 2" took off for 94 hours and 1 minute. It landed at the Cassville Military Base near Fort Worth, Texas at 10:31 a.m. on the 2nd, completing its first non-stop round-the-world flight. The B.50 bomber refueled four times during its 23452-mile flight. "Miss Lucky 2" took off just after noon on February 26 and flew east. There was refueling over the Azores earlier on Sunday, once over Saudi Arabia later that day, and again over Manila and Hawaii on the evening of the 1st. Air Force officials said the flight showed that U.S. aircraft could drop an atomic bomb anywhere on earth at any time.
