On this day, 28 years ago, on December 3, 1997 (November 4, 1997, the ancient city of Pingyao was included in the World Cultural Heritage List. The 21st session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee passed a resolution on December 3, 1997 to include the ancient city of Pingyao in Shanxi Province on the World Cultural Heritage List. After investigation and demonstration, relevant experts from the World Heritage Committee believed that Pingyao is "the most completely preserved ancient county town of China in China. It is an outstanding example of a Han nationality city in China during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the historical development of China, it shows people a complete picture of extraordinary cultural, social, economic and religious development." The ancient city of Pingyao is located in the Jinzhong area in central Shanxi, 90 kilometers away from Taiyuan City. It was built during the period of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty and has a history of 2800 years. Since my country implemented the "prefecture and county system" in 221 BC, Pingyao has always been the seat of county governance. The ancient city of Pingyao was originally a rammed earth wall and was relatively small in scale. In the third year of Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty, it began to expand to its current size. For more than 600 years, the urban area and planning pattern have basically remained unchanged. The ancient city wall is completely preserved. Ancient buildings such as the Confucian Temple Dacheng Hall, Qingxu Temple, God of Wealth Temple, city buildings, county government offices, and Jixiang Temple are arranged in an orderly manner. There are 3997 residential buildings, of which more than 400 have high preservation value. The street pattern in the Urban area consists of four streets, eight streets, and seventy-two alleys, which fully reflects the ancient level of "etiquette". On both sides of the main street, commercial shops built from the 17th to 19th centuries are basically preserved. The entire ancient city fully reflects the original historical appearance of the 18th to 19th centuries. The ancient city of Pingyao includes ancient buildings and other cultural relics, the number and taste of which are rare. They include Zhenguo Temple, which was built in the seventh year of Tianhui in the Northern Han Dynasty and listed as the third most precious ancient wooden structure in my country; it was rebuilt in the third year of Jin Dading. In the country, there are few Confucian temples, Dacheng Hall, and the world-famous Shuanglin Temple. Pingyao is also one of the important birthplaces of the well-known "Shanxi merchants" in China.
