On this day, 39 years ago, on July 29, 1986 (June 23, 1986, the founder of the "Two Bombs", Deng Jiaxian, passed away. Deng Jiaxian, who was seriously ill, discussed academic issues with his colleagues in the hospital. Deng Jiaxian was born in Huaining, Anhui Province in June 1924. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Peiping. Deng Jiaxian's father, Deng Yizhe, was a professor at Tsinghua University and the School of Arts at Peking University, and he had been friends with Yang Zhenning's father, Yang Wuzhi, for many years. Both families were originally from Anhui and became neighbors in Tsinghua Garden. Deng Jiaxian and Yang Zhenning forged a deep friendship since childhood. Young Deng Jiaxian and Yang Zhenning often played glass balls, racquetball, and competed in tree climbing together. Later, the two entered Peiping Xuede Middle School. The happy youth did not last long. Deng Jiaxian lived in a period of deep national disaster. After the July 7th Incident, Japanese invaders armed with long guns and bayonets entered Peiping City. Soon, Peking University and Tsinghua University both retreated to the south, and the campuses were empty. Deng Jiaxian's father suffered from lung disease and was bleeding profusely, and the whole family was stranded. In the ten months after the July 7th Incident, the Japanese invaders trampled on a large area of the country from north to south. The hatred for subjugation and national hatred were all rooted in Deng Jiaxian's heart. In 1941, Deng Jiaxian entered National Southwest Associated University. Southwest Associated University was established during the extremely difficult period of the Anti-Japanese War. It was formed by the merger of Tsinghua University, Peking University and Nankai University. The conditions were simple and the life was miserable. Despite this, the UN General Assembly has a very good academic atmosphere and has cultivated many outstanding talents. Deng Jiaxian successfully completed four years of university studies with good results. After graduating in 1945, he taught at Wenzheng Middle School and Peiwen Middle School in Kunming City for three months. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Peking University moved back to Peiping. Deng Jiaxian was recruited as an assistant professor in the Physics Department of Peking University. In the following years, the student democratic movement in the north developed vigorously under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. Deng Jiaxian actively participated in the progressive movement of Peking University School of Technology and enthusiastically supported the democratic student movement. He served as chairman of the Peking University Staff Federation. In the summer of 1948, the War of Liberation was won one after another and the reactionary rule of the Kuomintang was on the verge of collapse. Deng Jiaxian was admitted to the United States as a postgraduate student. He came to the United States with the clear goal of "serving the construction of the country in the future" and entered the Graduate School of Physics at Purdue University in Indiana. While engaging in study and research, he actively participated in the activities of the Purdue University branch of the "China Science Workers Association", a group of progressive international students, and paid close attention to the situation in the motherland. He was elected as one of the branch officers. In the spring of 1950, the news of the birth of New China reached the shores of the ocean. Deng Jiaxian was determined to return home as soon as possible. It took him two months to finish writing his thesis, and successfully passed the defense on August 5. He attended the doctoral certificate awarding ceremony on the 20th. On the ninth day after obtaining his degree, Deng Jiaxian boarded the USS President Wilson and returned home. There were more than 100 China students and scholars on board the ship. They broke through many obstacles and finally returned to the embrace of the motherland on the eve of National Day. After Deng Jiaxian returned to China, he came to the newly established Institute of Modern Physics of China Academy of Sciences (renamed the Institute of Physics in 1953 and the Institute of Atomic Energy in 1958) as an assistant researcher. Under the leadership of Peng Huanwu, he engaged in theoretical research on atomic nuclei. Two years later, he was promoted to associate researcher at the age of 28. In 1953, Deng Jiaxian and Xu Luxi married, and they lived a peaceful and happy life for five years after marriage. In 1958, a major turning point occurred in Deng Jiaxian's life. He was recommended to meet the Second Ministry of Machinery Industry and accepted the glorious task of participating in organizing and leading the development of my country's nuclear weapons. Deng Jiaxian went undercover from then on and rushed to a new job without hesitation, leaving for the rest of his life. At the beginning of his business, Deng Jiaxian was responsible for selecting and organizing the first batch of teams to develop atomic bombs from several universities in Beijing. In the autumn of 1958, he and twenty-eight newly graduated college students came to a farmland on the outskirts of Beijing and began the initial battle. In September 1962, the theoretical design plan for my country's first atomic bomb was born. Based on this plan, the Party Leadership Group of the Second Machinery Department submitted the "Report on Self-reliance in Building an Atomic Energy Industry" to the Party Central Committee. On November 3, Chairman Mao reviewed the report and personally wrote: "Agreed, very good. We must work together to do this job well." The Political Bureau made a decision and established a 15-member Central Committee headed by Premier Zhou. Under the chairmanship of General Secretary Deng Xiaoping, it was determined that the date of the first atomic bomb explosion would be around the 12th anniversary of the National Day. Deng Jiaxian solemnly reviewed the first atomic bomb. The overall reliability of the bomb was signed. Then, a series of experimental predictions and results analysis were carried out according to this plan. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon on October 16, 1964, my country's first atomic bomb exploded successfully. At the end of the vast Gobi Desert, a mushroom-like smoke cloud slowly rose behind flashes, fireballs and rumbles. Although it was 1945 compared with the atomic bomb explosion in the New Mexico Desert in the United States. Nineteen years later, it shocked the world so strongly. After the successful atomic bomb test, Deng Jiaxian continued to lead the new task of developing hydrogen bombs. The hydrogen bomb principle was broken through at the end of 1966. On June 17, 1967, China's first hydrogen bomb exploded successfully after getting rid of the turmoil. From atomic bomb to hydrogen bomb, it took the United States seven years, the Soviet Union four years, France eight years, but my country only took two years and eight months! After 1972, Deng Jiaxian successively served as vice president and president of the Nuclear Weapons Research Institute, shouldering important responsibilities. Deng Jiaxian worked selflessly for years, and his work turned into illness. On July 29, 1986, Deng Jiaxian passed away in Beijing.
