Breaking-News >> TodayHistory November 9, 1928 Harbin's "1st September" student movement
On this day, 97 years ago, November 9, 1928 (September 28, 1928, the 1928 lunar calendar), Harbin's "One Day Nine" student movement. On May 13, 1928, under pressure from Japan, Zhang Zuolin and Jotaro Yamamoto formally signed the "Manchuria and New Five Roads Agreement" to betray the right of way to Northeast China. After the news reached Harbin, students from various colleges and universities gathered to oppose Japan's construction of a railway in Northeast China. On November 4, student representatives from Harbin Institute of Technology, Hozheng University, Medical Specialized School, East Province Special Region No. 1 Middle School, No. 2 Middle School, No. 3 Middle School, Girls 'Middle School, and Jilin Provincial No. 6 Middle School gathered in the auditorium of No. 1 Middle School to organize the establishment of the Harbin Student Rights of Road Maintenance Federation. The "Decision on General Strike, Marches, and Anti-Road Construction Struggle" was adopted at the meeting, and it is scheduled to organize student demonstrations across the city the next day. At noon on the 5th, more than 200 students from various universities and middle schools in Harbin gathered at the Chief Executive's Office of the Nangang East Provincial Special Region (now the Nangang Minyi Street Railway Middle School site) to petition. After news of the demonstration by students from various schools in Harbin spread on the 5th, students from Shuangcheng County Provincial No. 3 Middle School and County Middle School held a demonstration and issued a declaration in support of the anti-revisionism "five-way" struggle in Northeast China. On the morning of November 8, the Harbin Student Rights of Road Federation held an emergency meeting at No. 1 Middle School and decided to hold a larger general strike and demonstration on November 9. At 9 a.m. on November 9, 1928, more than 5000 students from universities, middle schools and some primary schools in Harbin braved the cold wind of early winter and rushed to the Second Middle School of the East Provincial Special District of Nangxu Highway (now Jingyang Street). The square opposite (Daowai District 8) gathered. Zhang Guixiang, chairman of the Federation of Students, delivered a brief mobilization speech: they should go to densely populated Daowai areas to hold demonstrations to awaken more people and jointly oppose the Japanese imperialists 'aggressive behavior of forcibly building the "Five Roads". After the meeting, the parade marched outside the road. When we arrived at the entrance of Zhengyang Street (now Jingyu Street), we found that there were fully armed military police guarding it. Binjiang County Governor Li Keyuan and Binjiang Police Director Gao Qidong personally led 30 army personnel and 50 police officers to set up barbed wire fences on the only way for the parade and closely guarded them. Seeing this situation, the student representative immediately argued with Gao Qidong: "Daowai is a gathering area for China. We must march to Daowai to publicize Japan's evil purpose of building the" Five Roads "to arouse the patriotism of our compatriots." Before the student representative could finish speaking, Gao Qidong said in a reprimanding tone: "National affairs do not require you to worry about. You are young and ignorant, do not study hard, and are instigated by bad people. It is illegal to go to the street and gather people to make trouble. On the order of the assistant marshal (Zhang Zuoxiang), the student trend must be strictly stopped..."Gao Qidong's threats and intimidation did not make the students retreat. The student representative questioned Gao Qidong: "Daowai is the land of China, and we are all China. You refused to allow China to enter China. However, the Japanese were forcibly building railways on China soil. Why didn't you stop them? Are we still guilty of patriotism?" Gao Qidong was speechless by the student representative. After the negotiations broke down, student representatives immediately met and decided to forcibly break through the blockade and enter Zhengyang Street to demonstrate. Immediately, a hand-to-hand battle began. According to historical records,"At the beginning, we resisted with bare hands, and then we fought with fists and feet. At the end, one side held the handle of the gun, and the other side fought back with a wooden stick. Then we seized the gun and the stick, and the chaos became more and more chaotic. So, the gun was fired into the air..."In an instant, the unarmed student was beaten to death. At this time, Zhang Huanxiang, Special Administrator of the Eastern Province, arrived by car with police officers. Zhang Huan said to the students: "I support all of you when you march in the SAR. Outside the road, there is nothing I can do. Go back quickly." Faced with injured classmates covered with blood on the streets, the angry students once again gathered in a team, shouting slogans such as "Down with Gao Qidong" and "Capture the murderer alive", and confronted the military police head-on. The students used bricks, stones, flagpoles, and wooden sticks to fight back at the military police, causing the reactionary military police to run away. Captain Jiang and two police officers who commanded the crackdown on the students were also injured by the students. Binjiang County Governor Li Keyuan and Police Commissioner Gao Qidong saw that the situation was bad and hurriedly got into the car and fled. The parade finally rushed into Zhengyang Street outside the road. After breaking through the blockade of the military and police, the parade walked through the main streets outside the road and gave speeches at the busy streets. Many people joined the parade. People standing on both sides of the street shouted anti-Japanese slogans together with students. Wherever the parade went, many businesses set off firecrackers to welcome them. When the procession arrived at the Binjiang County Office on 16th Street (now the outpatient site of the Fourth Hospital of the City), it was already around 4 p.m. The students surrounded the county office and asked Li Keyuan and Gao Qidong to come out and answer the reasons for suppressing the student movement, but they never dared to show up. After that, the procession returned to Daoli from outside the road and went to the Yin Office of Binjiang Road, asking Cai Yunsheng to come out and speak. By this time, Cai Yunsheng had long fled. That night, the students put forward three demands to Zhang Huanxiang: (1) to abandon the road construction treaty;(2) to protect students 'freedom to march, demonstrate and publicize;(3) to severely punish Li Keyuan, Gao Qidong, and Cai Yunsheng and treat injured students. The history of this incident is known as the "October 9" tragedy. Eight students were seriously injured, 140 were slightly injured, and 43 were hospitalized. Despite this, the authorities denied every effort to suppress the patriotic movement of students. In order to support the struggle of patriotic students, people from all walks of life in Harbin condemned the authorities 'bloody crackdown. On the night of the student demonstration, many citizens brought condolences to the hospital to visit the injured students. The Harbin Communique and the International Association both published prominent news and photos of police beating and injuring students, and published articles criticizing the traitorous behavior of warlords. Workers at the 36-Peng General Factory of the Middle East Railway participated in the anti-Japanese struggle to build roads, saying that they "vowed to support students" and distributed more than 2000 leaflets. The "January 9" incident in Harbin disrupted Japan's plan to plunder the right of road in northeastern China and postponed the process of building the "Five Roads." Since then, although Japan has adopted various means to fulfill the so-called "Manchuria and Mongolia New Five-Road Agreement", the Japanese imperialists 'ambition to start building the "Five Roads" failed in the end due to the strong opposition of the people in Northeast China. When the student team arrived at the intersection of Zhengyang Street in Daowai District, they were intercepted by reactionary military police and police in their struggle to oppose Japanese aggression and safeguard road rights News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/15fk.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.15-08:53] 访问:78
