On June 26, 2009 (May 4th of the 2009 lunar calendar), Wutai Mountain was successfully applied for the cultural heritage. On June 26, 2009, Wutai Mountain in Shanxi, China was officially included in the World Heritage List at the 33rd World Heritage Conference held in Seville, Spain. The picture shows the venue of the 33rd World Heritage Conference. At 12:36 local time on the 26th, at the 33rd World Heritage Committee meeting held in Seville, Spain, the application for a World Cultural Heritage Project of Mount Wutai in China was reviewed and approved. So far, 38 scenic sites have been included in the World Heritage List in China. Among them, 27 are cultural heritages, 7 are natural heritages, and 4 are mixed cultural and natural heritages. Liang Yousheng, director of the Wutai Mountain Administration Bureau of Shanxi Province who attended the World Heritage Conference, said in a telephone connection with reporters: "The successful application of Wutai Mountain for a cultural heritage is like a child who has just been admitted to college. There is still a long way to learn in the future." Wutai Mountain is located in the northern part of Shanxi Province, China, with its center 230 kilometers away from Taiyuan City, the capital of Shanxi. Fanggong Linyu constitutes the largest existing ancient Buddhist building group in East Asia and even the world. Currently, there are 68 temples on Wutai Mountain, which is the earliest and largest international Buddhist temple in China. Han Jianggen, deputy secretary-general of the Wutai Mountain Buddhist Association, who has long been concerned about Wutai Mountain's application for cultural heritage, said that Wutai Mountain is composed of five terraces, which perfectly integrate the natural landform and Buddhist culture. It typically condenses the belief in Buddha into the worship of natural mountains, perfectly embodying China's philosophical thought of "harmony between man and nature" and has become the center of Buddhist Manjusri belief that lasted for more than 1600 years-a unique and vibrant combined cultural landscape. Comment: Wutai Mountain heritage preservation, protection and management are in good condition, with a high degree of authenticity and integrity. The Wutai Mountain Temple Complex meets the authenticity requirements of world cultural heritage.
