Breaking-News >> TodayHistory King George VI of England was born on December 14, 1895
130 years ago today, on December 14, 1895 (October 28, 1895 in the lunar calendar), King George VI of England was born. King George VI (December 14, 1895-February 6, 1952), formerly known as Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor ("Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor"), was King of England, and reigned from December 11, 1936 to February 6, 1952. He was the last Indian Emperor (1936-1947), the last Irish King (1936-1949), and the only Dominion King of India (1947-1949). George VI was known by his family as "Bertie" and by the public as "Prince Albert" before he ascended the throne. He was the second son of George V (formerly Duke of York) and Queen Mary (formerly Duchess of Mary). In 1920 he became Duke of York, Earl of Inverness and Baron Killarney. It seemed that he had no chance of succeeding to the throne because his brother, the very popular and intelligent Crown Prince Edward, was ahead of him in succession. Because of this, Prince Albert was allowed to serve in the Royal Navy during World War I and had greater freedom in choosing his wife. In 1923, he finally married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon after repeated rejections. Since they were unlikely to inherit the throne, the couple were able to raise their two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, in more normal circumstances. Albert was very shy and suffered from severe stuttering throughout his life. He was very unhappy when he learned that his brother, who succeeded to the throne in 1936, had finally decided to abdicate because of marriage issues and that he would inherit the throne. On May 12, 1937, he was enthroned at Westminster Abbey and changed his name to George VI. In doing so, he complied with Queen XXX's wishes that no subsequent British monarch could be named after "Albert". On the other hand, he also re-established public confidence in the royal family by using the same name as his father. Two years later, when World War II broke out, the low-profile royal family at that time hoped to become a role model for leading the country to victory, and they were indeed an important factor in maintaining the fighting spirit of the British people during World War II. The king's Christmas speech early in the war boosted morale. In June 1939, the king and his wife visited the United States. This was the first time that a British monarch visited the United States. After the war, the king's health deteriorated rapidly. Due to long-term smoking, George VI suffered from severe lung cancer. He was last seen in public at London Airport to see off his eldest daughter Elizabeth, who was visiting Africa. On February 6, 1952, King George VI died in his sleep due to thrombosis, and his body was buried in Windsor Castle. The eldest daughter, Princess Elizabeth, ascended the throne as Elizabeth II.
