He opposed the Sugar Ordinance, the Stamp Duty Ordinance, and the Townsend Tax Law. He instigated the Boston Tea Party and shocked the United States. He was a delegate to two Continental Congresses, signed the Declaration of Independence, and participated in the drafting of the Confederation Constitution. In 1787, after the Shays Uprising broke out against the state government's indifference to the farmers, he supported James Bowden's severe suppression of the uprising. After the Constituent Convention, he wavered between the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists. He served as governor of Massachusetts from 1794 to 1797, and died in Boston in 1803.
