March 18, 1942 The Battle of Dianmu Road of the Anti-Japanese War began
On this day, 83 years ago, on March 18, 1942 (February 2, 1942, the Battle of Dianmu Road in the Anti-Japanese War began. From March to September 1942 (the 31st year of the Republic of China), during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the China Expeditionary Force conducted a defensive campaign against the Japanese 15th Army in southwestern Yunnan Province, Myanmar, northwest Thailand and northeastern India. After the outbreak of the Pacific War, China formed an anti-fascist united front with the Soviet Union, the United States, Britain and countries in Southeast Asia and Oceania. In January of that year, at the suggestion of the United States and Britain, the command headquarters of the China Theater (originally including China, Thailand, Vietnam and northern Myanmar) was established. In March, the Japanese army attacked Myanmar (a British colony at the time), and the British garrison was in urgent need. China, composed of more than 100,000 people from the 5th, 6th and 66th Armies of the Army, formed the 1st Route of the China Expeditionary Force. Under the command of Commander Luo Zhuoying, it entered Myanmar to fight side by side with the Allies. On the 8th, the Japanese 15th Corps landed in Yangon under the command of Commander Shojiro Iida and headed north on different routes. On the one hand, the 33rd Division attacked Baimu from Yangon along the east bank of the Irrawaddy River; on the other hand, the 55th Division invaded Donggoo and Binwenna from Pegu to the Yangman Railway in an attempt to cut off the international transportation line in southwest China. On March 18, the vanguard troops of the 55th Division of the Japanese Army came into contact with the 5th Army's warning troops south of Biaoguan. The Cavalry Regiment of the 5th Army was attacked by the Japanese army and moved to the Ekechun area. Then the Japanese army launched another attack, and after fierce fighting, Ekechun fell. The Japanese army continued to attack Donggoo and engaged in fierce battles with the 200th Division of the 5th Army, with heavy casualties on both sides. The Japanese side veered to the right flank and the 200th Division moved north. At this time, the new 22nd Division of the 5th Army counterattacked from the direction of Li Daqi, causing heavy casualties to the Japanese army. The two sides faced each other on the River Swaa. On April 11, the Japanese 55th Division and one of the reinforcing 18th Division each attacked Li Daqi. After fierce fighting, the newly formed 22nd Division moved to Binwenna one by one. The Japanese army invaded the Binwenna area and was repelled by the 96th Division of the 5th Army. Later, due to the retreat of the right-wing British troops and prominent positions, the various departments of the 5th Army abandoned Binvena and moved towards Miktila and Minjian. On the 16th, after breaking through the British position, the 33rd Division of the Japanese Army surrounded the 1st Division and the Chariot Battalion of the British-Burmese Army in the area north of Yen 'angqiang. A new 38th Division of the 66th Army rushed forward and fought fiercely with the Japanese for two days and nights, killing more than 1000 Japanese people. After the Japanese army captured Toungoo, they attacked Maoke and Yado with the 56th Division. The 6th Army successively blocked the Japanese army in the Moltke, Pak Ko, Wo Bang, and Relem areas, and returned to China after fighting the Japanese army in the Burmese and Thai border area east of the Salween River. The 200th Division blocked the Japanese invasion of the north in the Wepong area and recovered the east branch. During the transfer, there was a fierce battle with the Japanese army, and the division commander Dai Anlan was seriously injured and died. After that, the 200th Division and 96th Division moved to the east bank of the Nujiang River via Tengchong and Weixi. The troops directly under the Fifth Army and the new 22nd and 38th Divisions were transferred to the Redo area on the northeastern border of India via Tailo and Xinpingyang. After the Japanese army captured Reliem on the 24th, it immediately divided into two routes and rushed towards Lashio. The 66th Army returned to reinforcements one after another, but lost one after another. The Japanese army pressed straight towards the border of China. After that, the Expeditionary Force that had retreated to western Yunnan and the 11th Group Army of Western Yunnan each retaliated against the Japanese army in the Longling and Tengchong areas, using one unit to enter the rear of the Japanese army as a guerrilla. The main force gradually retreated to the east bank of the Nujiang River and confronted the Japanese army across the river. By September 16, the battle ended. In this battle, the Expeditionary Force fought for more than a month and was praised by the world for its bravery and tenacity in defending Donggoo and rescuing the British army. However, due to reasons such as the late time to go abroad, lack of coordination among the allied forces in combat, and multiple command, the expeditionary force was always in a passive posture and failed to achieve the battle intention.
