March 25, 1985 The United States helped train operations from space
40 years ago today, March 25, 1985 (February 5, 1985 in the lunar calendar), the United States helped train operations from space. On March 25, 1985, the Burlington Northern Railway Company operated approximately 900 trains every day on more than 25000 miles of railway in 25 states and two Canadian provinces. The company was the first railway company to test using a space satellite system to track all of its rolling stock. Burlington Northern Railway installed computers and electronics on both locomotives to receive satellite transmissions at an altitude of 12500 miles. The railway company used an advanced railway electronic system developed by Rockwell International to determine the position of the two test trains within 150 feet, which is more advanced than signaling systems used for a century, which determine the position of a train with error of 7 to 10 miles.
