On this day, 54 years ago, January 15, 1971 (December 19, 1970 in the lunar calendar), Amin became President of Uganda through a coup d'état. Ugandan President Idi Amin Dada On January 15, 1971, General Amin, Chief of Staff of the Ugandan Army, came to power in a military coup. President Obote was attending a conference in Singapore. During his administration from 1971 to 1979, he massacred nearly 400,000 people. In October 1978, after Amin launched a war to invade neighboring Tanzania, Tanzanian President Nyerere took a large-scale retaliatory action in January 1979, and 45000 Tanzanian soldiers invaded Uganda. The Ugandan army was still retreating, and Amin was forced to step down. On March 19, 1979, he was charged with multiple atrocities and went into exile in Saudi Arabia. He died on August 16, 2003 at King Faisal Expert Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
