Breaking-News >> TodayHistory April 4, 1660 Charles II proclaimed the Breda Declaration
On this day, 365 years ago, on April 4, 1660 (February 25, 1660, the lunar calendar), Charles II proclaimed the Breda Declaration. In the mid-17th century, the British bourgeois revolution overthrew the Stuart Dynasty, executed Charles I of the Third Kingdom, and established the Republic of Britain. On September 3, 1658, Cromwell, the "Protector of the King", died of illness, and his son Charles Cromwell succeeded the Protector of the country. The regime was controlled by some senior officers. The Presbyterian members of Parliament and the new aristocrats were dissatisfied with the officers 'council's monopoly of power and conspired to restore the monarchy with the son of Charles, who had gone to France from Vietnam. In February 1660, they used the military power of General Monk, a hidden Labour member stationed in Scotland, to control the political situation and sent Monk to negotiate with Charles Stuart. On April 4, 1660, Monk reached an agreement with Charles Stuart, who issued the Breda Declaration in the Netherlands. The declaration put forward three commitments: ① to protect land and property changes that occurred during the revolution;② to grant amnesty to all participants in the revolution; and ③ to guarantee freedom of religious belief. This declaration is a concession to the bourgeoisie and the new aristocracy. On May 8, Parliament declared Charles Stuart King of England.
