On this day, 383 years ago, on August 14, 1642 (July 19, 1642 in the lunar calendar), the Dutch navigator Tasman set sail in Jakarta. Dutch navigator. Born in about 1603 in a rural area near the city of Groningen, the Netherlands. Joined the Dutch East India Company in about 1632. In 1634, he set sail to Seram Island in Indonesia. In 1639, he accompanied the ship to the waters east of Japan to search for islands producing gold and silver. He then went to Japan, Cambodia, Sumatra and other places for trade. Later, he was sent by A. Vandimen, Governor of the Dutch East Indies, to explore routes to South America and the unknown "Southern Continent". On August 14, 1642, Tasman set sail from Batavia (present-day Jakarta) and entered the Pacific through the Indian Ocean. Arrived in Tasmania on November 24, called Vandimen Land. December 13 to South Island of New Zealand. Leaving New Zealand on January 4, 1643, the islands of Tonga and Fiji were discovered on the way. Returned to Batavia in June. In 1644, the fleet surveyed the northern coast of Australia and charted it. In 1648, the fleet fought Spain in Philippine waters. He retired in 1653 and lived in Batavia, where he died around 1659. In 1694, Britain published his nautical diary, and in 1860 Y. Zwalt published his travel notes.
