On January 25, 1957, India declared Kashmir to become a state of India
On this day, 68 years ago, January 25, 1957 (December 25, 1956 in the lunar calendar), India declared Kashmir to become a state of India. Kashmir, full name "Jammu and Kashmir." It is located in the northwest of the South Asian subcontinent. The area is about 190,000 square kilometers. The Kashmir issue is a legacy of British colonialism when India and Pakistan were divided. Before 1947, it was a native state of British India. When India and Pakistan divided and became independent, the issue of Kashmir's ownership was not resolved. The Mountbatten Plan stipulated that Kashmir could freely decide to join India or Pakistan or declare independence. In October 1947, an armed conflict broke out between India and Pakistan in Kashmir. The ceasefire line was drawn in 1949. Pakistan controlled areas account for about two-fifths of the total area and about a quarter of the population. The rest are controlled by India. Pakistan has always advocated holding a referendum, while India has declared that the principle of holding a referendum is no longer applicable on the grounds of Pakistan's participation in the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization and the Baghdad Treaty Organization. In November 1956, the Constituent Assembly of Indian-occupied Kashmir adopted the Constitution. On January 25, 1957, India declared that Kashmir "is an integral part of the Indian Federation." During the two India-Pakistan wars in September 1965 and November 1971, some places west of the ceasefire line were occupied by India.
