109 years ago today, July 16, 1916 (June 17, 1916, the father of lactic acid bacteria, Mechennikov, passed away. Photo taken by French photographer Nadar of Mechennikov Elieh Mechennikov (‰ л ья ‰ л ь и чМечников, May 16, 1845-July 16, 1916) was born in Ukraine. He was a Russian microbiologist and immunologist and one of the pioneers in immune system research. In 1908, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research on phagocytosis, a form of immunity performed by white blood cells. Because of the discovery of the benefits of lactic acid bacteria on the human body, people call it the "father of lactic acid bacteria."
