On this day, 26 years ago, May 18, 1999 (April 4, 1999 in the lunar calendar), the criminal who poisoned the white swan was sentenced. On May 18, 1999, the People's Court of Shan County, Henan Province held a trial to try two murderers who poisoned white swans. The court found that Zhu Zhongping, a native of Weishan County, Shandong Province, colluded with Zhao Shishi, a native of Lake District, Sanmenxia City, Henan Province, to put pesticides in the Shan County section of the Sanmenxia Reservoir Area of the Yellow River many times in early January to poison and sell wild water ducks. During this period, both men found white swans active on the nearby water surface, but continued to administer the drug, causing serious consequences of poisoning 44 white swans and deaths of 27 of them. Both men's actions constituted the crime of illegally killing precious and endangered wild animals. In accordance with relevant laws, Zhu Zhongping was sentenced to 12 years in prison, deprived of political rights for two years, and fined 15,000 yuan; Zhao Shishi was sentenced to 13 years in prison, deprived of political rights for 3 years and fined 20,000 yuan.
