Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On December 28, 1915, Britain first introduced compulsory military service
110 years ago today, on December 28, 1915 (November 22, 1915 in the lunar calendar), the United Kingdom first implemented compulsory military service. On December 28, 1915, during the First World War, the British government passed a decree introducing compulsory military service. At that time, Britain had been in the war for 16 months, and the first batch of about 100,000 volunteers had all taken action. Therefore, the British government wants emergency conscription. In the First World War, 9 million people died in Britain. Contemporary foreign armed forces mainly use the following methods when replenishing personnel: Compulsory military service (Israel, North Korea and other countries); Implement militia system based on compulsory military service (Switzerland); Contract military service (United States, Britain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, Portugal, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and other countries); mixed military service, that is, a combination of compulsory military service and contractual military service (Germany, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Poland, Turkey, Belarus and other countries) The U.S. Armed Forces fully adopt voluntary military service. On September 28, 1971, the President of the United States approved the Contract Military Service Act. Starting from July 1, 1973, the U.S. Armed Forces began to implement contractual military service. The failure of the Vietnam War prompted the U.S. military to transition to a professional military. Additional experience of foreign armed forces personnel shows that if there is no threat of large-scale war and a large-scale (millions of people) army is not needed to influence the outcome of the war, countries often tend to reduce the number of troops and improve the professional level of the military. Currently, most economically and politically stable countries in the world adopt a mixed military service system that combines contractual military service and compulsory military service. Therefore, it is not advisable to absolute the advantages and disadvantages of a certain military service system. It is best to adopt the strengths of various military service systems. NATO countries account for 45% of the total, including 85% in the Federal Republic of Germany, 30% in Greece and Norway, and 60-65% in Denmark. At the same time, the proportion of conscripts and contractors in the armed forces varies from service to service. The proportion of conscripts in the German army is: about 20% for the Army, 15% for the Navy, and 10% for the Navy. Countries usually determine the ratio of compulsory military service personnel to contract military service personnel based on national security priorities, the nature of the threat, and their own economic strength. On March 7, 1978, my country implemented a system of combining conscripts and volunteers, and a military service system of combining militia and reserve service. According to the needs of the troops and their own voluntariness, some conscripts will be converted into volunteers, and the service years of conscripts will be appropriately extended. Since 1978, the number of years of service for conscripts has been: 3 years for soldiers in the Army; 4 years for soldiers in the Air Force, Naval Ground Services and Army Special Technical Forces; and 5 years for soldiers in the Naval Ship Corps and Army Ship Detachment. In 2000, in order to adapt to the needs of modern military development, our military carried out a thorough reform of the volunteer system that has been in use for 21 years: the volunteer system was abolished, the conscript and non-commissioned officer system was implemented, and the treatment of non-commissioned officers was greatly improved, and skilled non-commissioned officers were encouraged to embark on the path of professional soldiers.
