After the founding of New China, Comrade Wu Xueqian served successively as deputy minister and minister of the International Liaison Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, member and standing committee member of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, director of the International Department of the All-China Youth Federation, and vice chairman of the All-China Youth Federation. From October 1958 to January 1978, he served successively as Director of the Fifth Division of the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central Committee, Leader of the West Asia and Africa Group, and Director of the Third Bureau. In April 1982, Comrade Wu Xueqian was appointed as First Deputy Minister and Party Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In November 1982, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Secretary of the Party Committee. In June 1983, he served as State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs. During his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs and State Councilor, it was a new era of my country's reform and opening up. In November 1987, Comrade Wu Xueqian was appointed deputy head of the Central Leading Group for Foreign Affairs, vice premier of the State Council in April 1988, and deputy head of the Central Leading Group for Taiwan Affairs in August 1988. He has made friendly visits to India, Japan and other countries and participated in activities commemorating the 20th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan. He participated in the independence celebrations of Namibia, participated in the negotiations on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Namibia, and signed the joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Namibia.

Comrade Wu Xueqian is a member of the 12th and 13th Central Committees of the Communist Party of China, and a member of the 12th (co-opted for the Fifth Plenary Session of the 12th Central Committee) and the 13th Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
