On June 4, 1998 (the tenth day of the fifth lunar month), my country's Internet users exceeded one million. As of June 1998, my country's Internet users exceeded the one million mark for the first time, reaching 1.06 million. Since April 1994, China Science and Technology Network achieved direct connection with the international Internet for the first time in China. In the past four years, my country's Internet has developed rapidly, and four Internet networks including China Public Computer Internet have been built. Especially in the first few months of 1998, Internet users surged by nearly 400,000, equivalent to the number of users developed last year. According to statistics, the number of Internet access machines nationwide has reached 518,000, including 78,000 direct Internet access computers and 270,000 users, and 440,000 dial-up Internet access computers and 790,000 users. More than half of the users are people and students engaged in computer science, education and scientific research, but nearly 30% of users already hope to obtain leisure and entertainment information such as food, clothing, accommodation and play through the Internet. Relevant people predict that with the further popularization of the Internet, ultimate consumer users will dominate. With the rapid development of the Internet in my country, there is also more and more Chinese information on the Internet. By the end of May, there were 8274 units including enterprises, government departments, and scientific research units registering domain names online in my country.
