Breaking-News >> TodayHistory June 16, 1964 The Group of 77 was established
On this day, 61 years ago, June 16, 1964 (May 7, 1964 in the lunar calendar), the Group of 77 was established. The Group of 77 is an economic organization established by developing countries to change their passive position in international economy and trade, improve the deteriorating exchange environment, and prevent the expanding balance of payments deficit of developing countries. Its predecessor was the Group of 75. In 1963, when the 18th United Nations General Assembly discussed the convening of the Conference on Trade and Development, the 75 developing countries participating in the Conference issued a "Joint Declaration", thus forming the Group of 75. In 1964, at the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development held in Geneva, the Group of 75 was increased to 77 countries and regions, and the "Joint Declaration of the Group of 77" was issued on June 16, 1964. Since then, the Group of 75 is known as the Group of 77. The Group of 77 came into being because the international unequal economic order has caused serious damage to developing countries. It reflects the historical trend of developing countries uniting to safeguard their own interests. Since its establishment, the Group of 77 has gradually expanded from UNCTAD in Geneva to other United Nations agencies. In addition, the Group of 77 is also present at some important United Nations meetings. The Group of 77 has no permanent institutions such as headquarters, secretariat, and no charter or budget. However, because member states share common interests, they can often speak with "one voice" when negotiating with developed countries. Before each UN General Assembly and UNCTAD, the group usually holds ministerial meetings to study countermeasures and unify the pace. Because the group coordinates its actions and steps, it has played a major role in safeguarding the independence and sovereignty of developing countries, establishing a new international economic order, and fighting in the international economic field. The group has held many ministerial meetings and adopted and published many programmatic documents, the most famous of which are the Algiers Charter adopted at the Algiers Conference in October 1967; the Principles of the Lima Declaration and Program of Action adopted at the Lima Conference in October-November 1971; the Manila Declaration and Program of Action adopted at the Manila Conference in February 1976; The Arusha Programme for Collective Self-reliance and Framework for Negotiations adopted at the February 1979 meeting; The Buenos Aires Platform adopted at the Buenos Aires Conference in 1983, etc. In April 1974, the group promoted the 6th special session of the General Assembly to adopt the "Declaration on the Establishment of a New International Economic Order" and the "Action Plan for Economic Cooperation among Developing Countries" drafted by it. These documents express the strong desire of developing countries to safeguard national independence and national sovereignty, develop national economies, oppose economic control and plunder, improve North-South relations, and strengthen South-South cooperation. As the role of developing countries in world affairs has increased, the membership of the Group of 77 has also expanded day by day. Now its membership has increased to more than 100, but its original name has always been used. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/1m7l.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.14-18:58] 访问:76
