Archaeologist and paleontologist Chen Mengjia passed away on September 3, 1966
On this day, 59 years ago, on September 3, 1966 (July 19, 1966 in the lunar calendar), archaeologist and palaeographist Chen Mengjia passed away. Chen Mengjia (1911-1966-), pen name Chen Manzai, was born in Nanjing in Shangyu, Zhejiang Province. He is a famous ancient philologist, archaeologist and poet in modern China. He graduated from the Law Department of Nanjing Dayang University in 1931. In the same year, he published his first work,"Poetry of Dreams", which was highly valued by Wen Yiduo and Xu Zhimo. At the invitation of Xu Zhimo, he went to Shanghai to edit "Selected Poems of Crescent Moon". In 1932, he studied at the School of Religion at Yanjing University. At the invitation of Wen Yiduo, he worked as an assistant professor at Qingdao University. Compiled his poems from the Song Shanghai War into "Chen Mengjia Comes Poems on the Front Line". In 1933, he went to Wuhu Middle School to teach and wrote the long lyrical poems "Past Days" and "The Great Song of Mount Tai and Beyond the Great Wall." In January 1934, he returned to Beijing and entered the postgraduate class of Yanjing University, specializing in China classical philology. He received a master's degree in 1936 and stayed at Yanjing University as a teaching assistant. In 1937, he taught Paleography at Southwest Associated University, the University of Chicago, and Tsinghua University. In 1944, he went to the University of Chicago to give lectures, during which he went to Europe to collect data on China bronzes. In 1947, he returned to teach at Tsinghua University in Beijing. In 1952, he served as a researcher at the Institute of Archaeology, China Academy of Sciences, and concurrently served as an academic member of the Institute of Archaeology. He was fascinated by ancient history chronology and the study of ancient myths. His contributions in the field of ancient philology mainly focus on his comprehensive research on oracle bone inscriptions, inscriptions on bronze vessels of the Yin and Zhou Dynasties, Han slips and ancient documents. His representative works are "A Summary of Oracles in the Yin Ruins"(1956),"Chronology of Bronze Vessels of the Western Zhou Dynasty","Wuwei Han slips" and "Remark of the Han slips","Bronze Vessels of the Yin Dynasty","Chronology of the Western Zhou Dynasty","General Theory of Shangshu","Chronology of the Western Zhou Dynasty","Chronology of the Six Kingdoms", etc. He is the author of poetry collections such as "Poetry Collection of Dreams","Spring Without Blooming","Collection of Iron Horse","On the Front Line","Poetry Collection of Dreams", and other academic research "China Philology" and other monographs. He was a well-known representative poet and important member of the late Crescent School. On September 3, 1966, Chen Mengjia hanged himself and died at the age of 55. Chen Mengjia's wife
