On June 17, 1980, scientist Peng Jiamu disappeared in Lop Nur
45 years ago today, June 17, 1980 (May 5, 1980, the lunar calendar), scientist Peng Jiamu disappeared in Lop Nur. Peng Jiamu visited the Lop Nur area during his lifetime. On June 17, 1980, Peng Jiamu, vice president of the Xinjiang Branch of the China Academy of Sciences and a famous scientist, led a comprehensive expedition team to inspect Lop Nur, Xinjiang. The Lop Nur area is rich in cultural relics and mineral resources. However, due to the changeable climate and harsh environment, transportation is very difficult, making it inaccessible. Peng Jiamu led the expedition team from north to south, overcoming numerous difficulties and obstacles, and successfully crossed the bottom of Lop Nur Lake 20 days earlier than originally planned, laying the foundation for further inspections in the future. After the original task was completed, Peng Jiamu suggested making full use of the originally planned inspection time to continue the eastward inspection. In the later stage of the inspection, the remaining gasoline and water of the inspection team could only last for two days. After camping near Kumkuduk, they asked for help from the local garrison through the radio and relied on their own strength to find water. On the morning of June 17, Peng Jiamu left a note saying "I am going east to find water" and walked deep into the desert alone, never returning to the camp.
