120 years ago today, September 5, 1905 (August 7, 1905 in the lunar calendar), the riots in Biya, Japan occurred. On September 5, 1905, a mass rally held in Hibiya Park in Tokyo triggered riots in the city, hence the name. On August 1905, the Russian governments began peace negotiations. Militarist groups in Japan used public dissatisfaction with the rise in rice prices and tax increases during the war to incite war fanaticism and oppose peace. On September 5, under the initiative of the Black Dragon Society and the Jinghe Issue Comrades Association, 30,000 Tokyo citizens gathered in Hibiya Park to demand the abolition of the peace treaty and the continuation of the war against Russia. After the meeting, fanatical citizens destroyed the pro-government National News newspaper and set fire to the official residence of the Minister of the Interior and many police stations. The chaos continued until the next day, when Tokyo was under martial law and the government dispatched troops to suppress it. During the riots, 2 police stations, 219 police stations or police booths, 13 churches, 53 homes, and 15 trams were burned down. More than 1700 rioters were arrested, more than 300 were prosecuted, and 87 people were sentenced.
