On May 31, 1958, France invited Charles de Gaulle to come out again
On this day, 67 years ago, on May 31, 1958 (April 13, 1958, the lunar calendar), France invited Charles de Gaulle to come out again. On May 31, 1958, the French government leaders, who were hesitant and powerless about the Algeria crisis, agreed to let de Gaulle come out again and give him the "special" powers he needed. Today in a small hotel in Paris not far from the Champs Elysees, leaders of all political parties except the Communist Party met with the general one after another. Although it was known that de Gaulle believed that various political parties were at the root of many of France's problems, most leaders assured him that they would support him if he were appointed prime minister tomorrow. Politician and socialist François Mitterrand feared that de Gaulle would become a dictator and did not support him. Mitterrand told de Gaulle: "It's not because I don't recognize your power, nor because I don't believe in your ambitions. But the president has many powers that can be transcended, and even if you don't abuse those powers, how can we ensure that your successors won't abuse those powers after you die? De Gaulle has always been an expert at skillfully refuting others. He replied: "In the final analysis, Mr. Mitterrand, there is only one thing that interests you, and that is my death. Yes, I will die eventually, but you can't tell me to die right away." In a recent series of talks, de Gaulle left most Socialist commentators speechless. Several may even be appointed to his new cabinet.
