On this day, 131 years ago, December 31, 1894 (December 5, 1894, the lunar calendar), dramatist Hong Shen was born. Hong Shen was born in Wujin, Jiangsu Province on December 31, 1894. He has loved drama since he was a child and has participated in drama performances many times when he was a student. In 1915, he wrote the first script with dialogue,"The Pear Seller", and then wrote "The Tragedy of the Poor People". From then on, he embarked on the path of drama creation and became one of the founders of my country's drama movement. In the summer of 1916, Hong Shen went to the United States to study, first studying ceramic engineering and later majoring in drama. After returning to China in 1922, in addition to teaching in Fudan, Jinan, Shandong, Zhongshan, Xiamen, Beijing Normal University and other universities, he mainly engaged in drama and film editing and editing. In 1923, he joined the Drama Association, participated in and led Fudan Drama Club and Nanguo Club, and made great contributions to the formation of modern drama in China and the improvement of theater artistic level. In 1930, Hong Shen joined the China Left-wing Writers 'Alliance and the Left-wing Dramatists' Alliance. By 1932, he had successively written rural trilogy that reflected the life and struggle of rural farmers in the south of the Yangtze River: "Wukui Bridge","Fragrant Rice","Green Dragon Pool". These are Hong Shen's masterpieces and excellent scripts that more comprehensively reflect the miserable life of farmers and their heroic struggle since the May 4th Five-Year Plan. They have strong anti-imperialist and anti-feudal significance. Before the July 7th Incident, Hong Shen actively engaged in national defense drama activities and wrote some one-act dramas with the theme of the War of Resistance, such as "Smuggling","Tungsten","Salted Fish Doctrine"(in cooperation with Shen Qiyu), etc., and founded the semi-monthly magazine "Guangming" with Xia Yan, making it one of the important positions for promoting the War of Resistance. Hong Shen learned from foreign countries but did not flatter them. He had no trace of servility or coquettish. In 1937, he criticized Wang Jingwei's pessimistic remarks about subjugation in Wuhan. In 1938, Hong Shen served as the drama chief of the Political Department of the Military Commission under the leadership of Zhou Enlai and Guo Moruo. He organized more than a dozen anti-enemy drama teams to go deep into rural areas in the interior to encourage resistance to Japan. During this period, with his strong revolutionary enthusiasm, he wrote plays such as "Flying General","Rice", and "Bao Deli", which played a positive role in promoting the Anti-Japanese Movement. After the Southern Anhui Incident in 1941, Hong Shen successively directed dramas such as "Goodbye to Hong Kong","Fascist Bacteria","Motherland Is Calling","Heroes of the Grassland" and other places in Guilin, Chongqing, Kunming and other places, effectively cooperating with the opposition to the Kuomintang government.
