On January 11, 1974, South Vietnam declared sovereignty over the Paracel Islands and Nansha Islands
On this day, 51 years ago, January 11, 1974 (December 19, 1973, the lunar calendar), South Vietnam declared sovereignty over the Paracel Islands and the Spratly Islands. Starting from August 1970, several neighboring countries such as Vietnam (before 1975, it was the puppet regime of South Vietnam) have successively occupied 34 islands in our Nansha Islands, and even spared the Yongle Islands in the Xisha Islands. The puppet troops of South Vietnam invaded Coral Island in 1956 and refused to leave. When oil-bearing landforms were discovered in the Nansha Islands, the puppet regime of South Vietnam openly declared its sovereignty over our country's Nansha and Paracel Islands in 1973 and included them in the territory of South Vietnam. On January 11, 1974, my country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs once again solemnly declared that my country enjoys indisputable territorial sovereignty over the Parsha Islands, Nansha Islands, Zhongsha Islands and Dongsha Islands. However, despite my country's warnings, the Saigon authorities brazenly dispatched warships to further violate the Paracel Islands and launched a maritime military provocation. On January 15, South Vietnam sent destroyers to invade the Yongle Sea Area and fired artillery at Ganquan Island to provoke normal fishermen. It also sent amphibious teams to board Treasure Island and Chenhang Island. At the same time, two destroyers and escort ships were dispatched to the Xisha Sea Area. In order to smash the enemy's attempt, defend territorial integrity and safeguard maritime rights and interests, the South China Sea Fleet of the Chinese Navy formed 271, 281 and 396 ship formations, which carried out self-defense counterattacks against the enemy ship formations, sank one enemy ship and damaged three enemy ships, recovered the coral, gold and silver islands occupied by South Vietnam, and rewritten the history of more than a hundred years of foreign invaders trampling on China's coastal areas.
