February 10, 1891 Russian female mathematician Sophie Kovalevskaya passed away
On this day, 134 years ago, on February 10, 1891 (January 2, 1891, the first female academician of the Academy of Sciences, Sophia Kovalevskaya, passed away. On January 15, 1850, Russian female mathematician Sophie Kovalevskaya was born into an aristocratic family in Moscow. At that time, the gates of Russian universities were closed to women. After some twists and turns, Sophie finally entered the University of Heidelberg in Germany. In 1874, she completed three papers on partial differential equations, Abelian integrals and Saturn's rings. Without an oral examination, she obtained the "Excellent Doctor of Philosophy" diploma from the University of Göttingen, a mathematical center in Germany. In 1889, Sophie became the first female corresponding academician of the Stockholm Academy of Sciences. On February 10, 1891, Sophie died of influenza in Stockholm at the age of 41.
