The Battle of Wuhan broke out on June 12, 1938
On this day, 87 years ago, June 12, 1938 (May 15, 1938, the Battle of Wuhan broke out. Chiang Kai-shek inspected Wuhan Battle Force Wuhan Battle (China calls it the Defense of Wuhan, and Japan calls it the Battle of Wuhan Raiders) was a large-scale battle in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. More than one million National Revolutionary Army under the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek defended Wuhan to resist the Imperial Japanese Army commanded by Junroku. The battlefield was on the south and north banks of the Yangtze River, spanning Anhui Province, Henan Province, Zhejiang Province and Hubei Province. The battle lasted for a total of four and a half months and was the longest, largest and most famous battle in the entire War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Battle of Wuhan On June 12, 1938, the Japanese Hotian Detachment landed in Anqing and soon occupied Anqing, and the Battle of Wuhan officially began. On September 6, Guangji fell. On the 29th, the Japanese army captured Tianjia Town, the Yangtze River fortress. By late October, all three towns in Wuhan had fallen into enemy forces, and the Battle of Wuhan ended. After the Japanese army occupied Nanjing (see the Battle of Nanjing), although the Kuomintang government moved westward to Chongqing, most of the government agencies and the military headquarters were located in Wuhan. Wuhan actually became the military, political, and economic center of the country at that time. On December 13, 1937, the Military Committee of the National Government drew up a battle plan to defend Wuhan. After the fall of Xuzhou, they adjusted their deployment and mobilized about 50 armies, 130 divisions, more than 200 aircraft of various types, more than 40 ships of various types and mine-laying launches, totaling more than 1 million people, to take advantage of the Dabie Mountains, Poyang Lake and The favorable terrain of the area on both sides of the Yangtze River to organize defense and defend Wuhan. It was decided to use one force to capture Anqing first as a forward base for attacking Wuhan, and then use the main force to attack the area north of the Dabie Mountains along the Huaihe River, capture Wuhan from Wushengguan, and use another force to advance westward along the Yangtze River. On the 4th, the Japanese army dispatched troops to Central China to adjust the battle sequence. Its commander, Jun Junliu, commanded the 2nd and 11th Armies, with a total of about 140 brigades and 250,000 troops, responsible for the operation against Wuhan. Ningji Okamura commanded five and a half divisions of the 11th Army to attack Wuhan along both sides of the Yangtze River; King Minhiko Higashi commanded four and a half divisions of the 2nd Army to attack Wuhan along the northern foot of the Dabie Mountains. As well as more than 120 ships of the Navy and the 3rd Fleet of Kawako Shiro, more than 500 aircraft from the Aviation Corps of Tokugawa Yoshishi, Japan's first pilot to fly into the sky, and five divisions directly under the Central China Dispatch Army respectively served as garrison missions in Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou and other areas to consolidate the rear and ensure this operation. The Battle of Wuhan included: the Battle of Madang, the Battle of Jiujiang, the Battle of Huangmei, the Battle of Guangji, the Battle of Tianjia Town, the Battle of Ruichang, the Battle of Matou Town, the Battle of Xingzi, the Battle of Wanjialing, the Battle of Fujinshan, and the Battle of Xinyang.
