On this day 48 years ago, on May 30, 1977 (April 13, 1977 lunar calendar), China established diplomatic relations with Barbados. Barbados is the easternmost island country in the Lesser Antilles in North America and its capital is Bridgetown. Barbados was inhabited by the Arawak and Caribbean Indians until the 16th century. In 1518, the Spanish landed on the island, and more than 10 years later, Portugal invaded. It was occupied by the British in 1624 and established a governor-general in 1627. It joined the West Indies Federation in 1958. It was granted internal autonomy in October 1961. It declared independence on November 30, 1966 and is now a member of the Commonwealth. On May 30, 1977, China established diplomatic relations with Barbados.
