Thirty-one years ago today, on October 16, 1994 (September 12, 1994 lunar calendar), German Chancellor Kohl was re-elected for the fourth time. On October 16, 1994, Helmut Kohl won the second general election after German reunification by a narrow majority, becoming the only federal chancellor in postwar German history to be re-elected for four consecutive terms. At that time, Western public opinion humorously said that "in difficult times, God always seems to smile on Kohl."
