Seventy-four years ago today, on February 16, 1951 (January 11, 1951), Jordan signed the Treaty of the Arab League. The Arab League Defense Treaty, also known as the Arab Convention on Collective Security, is a treaty for the member states of the Arab League to strengthen military and economic cooperation. After the First Arab-Israeli War of 1948-1949, the member states of the Arab League jointly resisted Israeli aggression and prevented conflicts between member states. At the initiative of Egypt, the Arab League drafted this treaty in Cairo on April 12, 1950. On February 17, Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and other countries signed to participate. The treaty consists of 13 articles (including a military annex), which stipulate that: The contracting parties are committed to maintaining and stabilizing peace and security, and affirm the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means; aggression against any of the contracting parties will be regarded as aggression against all the contracting parties, and the contracting parties will take all measures, including the use of force, to repel the aggression. In addition, the treaty stipulates that the League shall establish a Joint Defense Council and a Permanent Military Committee to be responsible for consolidating and coordinating military ties among the countries, and establish an Economic Council to strengthen economic cooperation among the contracting parties.
