August 16, 1945 The Preparatory Committee for the Founding of the People's Republic of Korea was established
Eighty years ago today, on August 16, 1945 (July 9, 1945 in the lunar calendar), the Preparatory Committee for the Founding of the DPRK was established. On August 15, 1945, after the release of Lyu Yun-heng, the leader of the former anti-Japanese organization "Korea Founding Alliance", he immediately joined the patriotic democrats of southern Korea to form the Preparatory Committee for the Founding of the DPRK in Seoul on August 16, preparing to establish a "genuine democratic regime of the nation" and realize the independence of the motherland. Lyu Yun-heng was elected as the chairperson of the committee. At the end of August, many regions of South Korea successively established their branches. On September 6, the "National People's Congress" was held in Seoul. More than 1,300 delegates attending the conference decided to establish the People's Republic of Korea after consultation. On September 10, the political program was adopted and the Central People's Committee was elected. After the US army entered South Korea in September, the Military and Political Office was established. On December 12, the occupying army authorities announced that they would not recognize the People's Committee, and dispatched military and police to suppress and forcibly dissolve the People's Committee. Lu Yunheng was assassinated on July 29, 1947.
