On December 5, 1995, former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo was indicted
Thirty years ago today, on December 5, 1995 (October 14, 1995 in the lunar calendar), former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo was indicted. On December 5, 1995, South Korean prosecutors indicted former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo, accusing him of establishing about $600 million in secret political funds and accepting about $370 million in bribes from more than 30 companies during his presidency from February 1988 to February 1993. On January 29, 1996, South Korean prosecutors sentenced five consortium bosses and nine other defendants who paid bribes to former President Roh Tae-woo. Kim Woo-jung, chairperson of Daewoo Group, Choi Won-suk, chairperson of East Asia Group, Jung Tae-shou, chairperson of Hanbao Group, Lee Kun-hee, chairperson of Samsung Group, and Zhang Zhenhao, chairperson of Zhenlu Group, were sentenced to four years in prison and three years in prison respectively. Lee Hyun-yu, the chief of the presidential police office under Roh Tae-woo, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined $800,000 for the crime of accepting bribes. Eight other defendants related to Roh Tae-woo's secret political funds case, including a former member of parliament and former chief economic secretary of the presidential office, were sentenced to one to five years in prison, respectively. The sentencing trial of Roh Tae-woo, the main culprit in this case, was postponed by prosecutors for committing bribery, military rebellion and civil disorder at the same time. In a supplementary interrogation conducted by prosecutors today, Roh Tae-woo said that the remaining secret political funds that formed the main body of his crime were funds intended for the reunification of the north and the south and the improvement of relations with the former socialist country. This is the first time Roh Tae-woo has disclosed the use of the remaining secret political funds. However, Roh Tae-woo still denied that the secret political funds he received were "bribery". Roh Tae-woo was arrested by prosecutors on November 16, 1995.
