On March 13, 1868, the U.S. Senate began impeaching President Andrew Johnson on charges of "serious crimes and misconduct." He was acquitted by one vote. Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) was the 17th President of the United States (April 15, 1865-March 3, 1869) was born in North Carolina on December 29, 1808. He came from a poor family as a child, had no formal education, worked as an apprentice, and later worked as a tailor. At the age of 21, he was elected to the City of Greenville and later mayor. Elected governor of Tennessee in 1853. Elected to the Senate in 1856. He was the only Southerner in the Senate during the Civil War who was welcomed by the North and trusted by President Lincoln. In 1862, he served as military chief of Tennessee. He was elected Vice President in the 1864 election. After President Lincoln was assassinated, Johnson succeeded him. After taking office, he stood on the stand of slave owners of the Southern Plantations and implemented a series of reactionary measures to rebuild the South, which was strongly opposed by the Republican radicals who controlled Congress. They launched a campaign to impeach Johnson. Although it failed, Johnson's reputation was discredited. In 1875, Johnson returned to the Tennessee Senate and died on July 31.
