On this day, 70 years ago, July 30, 1955 (June 12, 1955, the "Military Service Law of the People's Republic of China" was promulgated and implemented. On July 30, 1955, the Second Session of the First National People's Congress passed the "Military Service Law of the People's Republic of China" and promulgated it for implementation. The Military Service Law stipulates that all male citizens over the age of 18, regardless of ethnicity, race, occupation, social origin, religious belief and education level, are obliged to perform military service; counter-revolutionaries and people who have been deprived of political rights for a certain period of time in accordance with the law are not allowed to perform military service. Specific provisions are also made on the time and methods of recruitment, as well as the rights and obligations of active, reserve and soldiers. On March 7, 1978, the first session of the Fifth National People's Congress approved the "Decision on the Military Service System" proposed by the State Council. It was decided to change the compulsory military service system to a system that combines conscripts and volunteers.
