August 27, 1883 Krakatoa volcano erupted
142 years ago today, on August 27, 1883 (July 25, 1883 lunar calendar), Krakatoa volcano erupted. Krakatoa volcano, located in the sea between the southern part of Sumatra and the island of Java, constantly spewed ash and steam. On August 27, 1883, the famous Krakatoa volcano erupted 3 times. The third of these eruptions had a violent explosion that filled the whole area with dust, rubble and toxic gases. The sky was pitch black, and the explosion could be heard 560 kilometers away in Karimon, Java Island. All the volcanoes on Java were erupting, and this terrifying fountain spewed fiery lava into the sky. The 100-kilometer-long Candance volcanic range sank into the sea in the explosion, and an 80-square-kilometer area from Cape Kapusen on Java Island to Negriba Solange fell into the sea. The city of Negriba, with 15,000 residents, disappeared in the huge waves. Waves tens of meters high hit Java, Sumatra and other vast areas with great speed. More than 300 towns in the West Indies were flooded. The eruption caused earthquakes and tsunamis, rubble and dust billowed in the air, and the sky was invisible for more than 400 square kilometers. In the waters 2,500 kilometers away from the volcano, the decks of ships were covered with a thick layer of volcanic ash. Tens of thousands of bodies were floating on the water. The ship Lauren was not far from Krakatoa. The ship was hit by the tsunami and ventured to sail, narrowly avoiding the disaster. However, the huge waves threw it up and down. The crew watched in horror as the seaside town was destroyed before their eyes. Merak Island and its inhabitants sank to the bottom of the sea, and 14 new craters rose from the sea, spewing lava, gas and stones. In Chiribonn, Java, hundreds of people were killed. The Great Monastery of Barung Butu, the unparalleled masterpiece in the history of Eastern architecture, was devastated by lava and flying stones. The temple was built in 790 AD. There are more than 4,000 exquisite reliefs in the temple, reflecting the history of the development of Buddhism. Earthquakes and tsunamis and countless rocks, fiery lava destroyed towns and islands one by one. Mida Island was covered, and Skur Island, Kalmar Island, and Velaton Island were submerged by sea water. All the lighthouses in the Sunda Strait were extinguished. Only three of the 2,500 quarrymen on Merak Island survived. The Lauren sailed out of the earthquake and tsunami area with trepidation. When the captain sailed to Anjar Fortress, he found that there was only one sailor left in a daze among the bodies. The earthquake caused by Krakatoa Volcano crossed the sea and reached Colombo, the capital of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), 2,800 kilometers away, and Mumbai, India's second largest city, 4,300 kilometers away. At Cape Horn, 8,000 kilometers away, the waves are hurtling towards land at a speed of more than 500 kilometers per hour. Much of the dust from Krakatoa's eruption remains high for two years, causing an unusual phenomenon in much of the world. In the Seychelles, the sun appears to be setting in fog, and the sky is fiery red. In Natal, the bright red in the sky gradually turns green and purple. People in South America see the sun blue. In Panama, the sun turns green. In Honolulu, people enjoy a green sunset for months. In remote areas of Connecticut, the sky is so bright red that people have reported fires to the fire brigade more than once. The volcanic eruption claimed more than 50,000 lives.
