In November, China workers at the Shanghai Nissho Yarn Factory held an anti-Japanese strike. The National Salvation United organized a strike support committee to support it. On November 23, 1936, the Nanjing government arrested and imprisoned Shen Junru, Zhang Naiqi, Zou Taofen, Li Gongpu, Sha Qianli, Shi Liang, and Wang Zaoshi, leaders of the National Salvation Federation from All walks of life in Shanghai on charges of "endangering the Republic of China." History calls it the "Seven Gentlemen" incident. The Nanjing government attempted to transfer seven people to the Suzhou High Court for trial. Under the opposition of Zhang Zhirang and other defense lawyers, a court session was held in the Criminal Division of the Second Branch of the Jiangsu High Court that day. The judge was forced to reject the requests of the police lawyer and the Public Security Bureau secret agent, and ruled that the "defendant" should be "blamed" to the defense lawyer for trial. On the 25th, under pressure from the National Government, the Public Concession Police Station re-arrested Shen and others without a court ruling and secretly detained them to Suzhou. On April 3, 1937, the Jiangsu High Court formulated 10 counts and filed a public prosecution against seven defendants. Shen Junru and others reasoned and refuted. During this period, 16 people including Soong Ching Ling and He Xiangning launched a national salvation and imprisonment campaign and actively rescued seven gentlemen.
