On this day, 83 years ago, on March 4, 1942 (January 18, 1942, the United States sent Stilwell to China to serve. Chiang Kai-shek, Commander-in-Chief of the China Theater, was with General Stilwell, Chief of Staff of the Theater. On March 4, 1942, U.S. Lieutenant General Joseph Warren Stilwell flew to Chongqing from the United States to take up the post of Chief of Staff of the China Theater. Stilwell graduated from the Army Officers Academy at West Point and participated in the First World War. He came to China in 1920 as an attaché to the U.S. Embassy and did not return to the United States until after the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War. He has served successively as battalion commander and chief of staff of the 15th US Regiment in Tianjin, and military attaché at the U.S. Embassy in China. He has a good understanding of China's national conditions. When the China Theater was established, Stilwell was then commander of the Third Corps of the US Army. At Chiang Kai-shek's request and considering Stilwell's good conditions, the U.S. government sent Stilwell to China to serve. Stilwell came to China and held multiple positions: (1) U.S. military representative in China,(2) commander of China, Britain and U.S. forces in Myanmar,(3) manager of leased materials to China,(4) supervisor of the Yunnan-Myanmar Highway,(5) commander of the U.S. Air Force in China, and (6) chief of staff of the Chinese Theater.
