Breaking-News >> TodayHistory Roman Emperor Henry V died
Henry IV surrendered power to Henry V Henry V was the last King of the Sarian Dynasty of the Roman people (reigned 1105 - 1125) and Emperor of the Roman Empire (crowned in 1111). He was the second son of the Roman Emperor Henry IV, and his mother was Bertha (of Turin). Henry was encouraged by the German princes to oppose his father, Henry IV, while still co-king. His first rebellion ended in failure, but he finally overthrew his father in 1105 and briefly imprisoned him. Although the Pope was one of the main supporters of Henry V's usurpation, Henry V did not soften any more than Henry IV in the battle for the right to nominate bishops. When Pope Pascal II refused to crown him, he marched on Rome (1110) and imprisoned the Pope and most of the cardinals. The Pope gave in temporarily, but soon withdrew all the concessions he had made to Henry V. In 1116, Henry V invaded Italy for the second time and drove Pascal II out of Rome (1117). When Pascal II died, he promoted a rival Pope, Gregory VIII. In 1122, Henry V finally reached a compromise with the new Pope Garistus II, basically resolving the dispute over the right to nominate bishops in the Worms Agreement, and deposing Gregory VIII.
