On July 14, 1965, Wang Jie, a good soldier who was "not afraid of hardship and not afraid of death" and squad leader of an engineering company of a certain armored unit of the Jinan Army, died heroically to protect the safety of others. He was only 23 years old. People's Liberation Army soldier Wang Jie taught the militiamen mine laying techniques near the Gulian River in Pixian County, Jiangsu Province. At the critical moment of an accidental explosion, he lunged at the explosion site and died heroically in order to protect the other 12 people present.
