On this day 77 years ago, on June 17, 1948 (May 11, 1948 lunar calendar), the Battle of Eastern Henan was won. Su Yu was in command of the Battle of Eastern Henan. On June 17, 1948, the Foreign Corps of the East China Field Army of the People's Liberation Army and the Central Plains Field Army held the Battle of Eastern Henan (also known as the Battle of Kaifeng and Suiqi). The Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China deployed heavy troops in response to the passive situation of the Kuomintang army in order to get rid of the battlefield in the Central Plains. It ordered the Foreign Corps of the East China Field Army and a part of the Central Plains Field Army to seek and destroy the Kuomintang and reorganize the Fifth Army in the Kaifeng to Xuzhou section of Longhai Road and its north and south areas. This was a large-scale annihilation battle including siege and mobile warfare. The campaign was divided into two stages. The first stage captured Kaifeng. On the morning of the 22nd, Kaifeng was conquered and more than 3,000 Kuomintang troops were annihilated. From the 27th to July 6th, the campaign entered the second stage of the Suiqi Campaign. On the evening of the 27th, the assault group launched a fierce attack on the District Shounian Corps that had entered the Suiqi area. The fierce battle lasted until July 2, annihilating the District Shounian Corps and the 75th Division Division; on the evening of July 2, the East China Field Army troops attacked the whole line of the Kuomintang reinforcements Huang Botao Corps and fought until the morning of the 6th, wiping out more than 3 regiments. In the second stage of the campaign, more than 50,000 Kuomintang troops were wiped out, and 7 counties including Laohekou and Qixian were recaptured. The East Henan Campaign wiped out a total of 90,000 Kuomintang troops, creating new favorable conditions for the further development of the Central Plains and East China War.
