On May 3, 1849, German Prime Minister Bernhard von Billow was born
176 years ago today, on May 3, 1849 (April 11, 1849 lunar calendar), German Prime Minister Bernhard von Bülow was born. Chancellor BernhardHeinrichKarlMartinvonB ülow (May 3, 1849 - October 28, 1929), German politician, served as Chancellor of the German Reich from 1900 to 1909. His failure to restrain the formation of the German military bloc is believed to have contributed to World War I. He served in the German Army during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71; later served in German consulates in various European capitals; and was appointed by Kaiser Wilhelm II as the fourth Chancellor of the Reich in 1900-09. His foreign policy, especially the open challenge to France in the Moroccan crisis of 1905 and his support for the Austrian Empire's annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908, further isolated Germany. There is a famous quote about Germany's foreign expansion policy in the early 20th century: "The time has passed when other nations divided the continents and the seas, and we Germans were content with the blue sky, and we also demand territory under the sun."
