Italian singer Enrico Caruso was born

Enrico Caruso (1873.2.25-1921), a world-famous Italian tenor, first performed as a baritone in his hometown of Naples in 1895, and in 1898 as Loles in the play "Fedula". After traveling to Genoa, St. Petersburg and other places to sing, it was very popular. In 1904, he went to the British Abbey Garden Opera House and became famous. He worked hard all his life and performed more than 50 operas. In ten years in New York, he sang more than 600 times, and more than 500 pieces could be performed at any time.

The most outstanding feature of Caruso's singing technique is his breathing technique. According to his backing tracker Foccido in the book "The Art of Caruso's Singing", Caruso applies the conjunctive breathing method of two ribs and one diaphragm. This breathing method is considered by the vocal masters of the Italian Bel Canto school to be the most natural breathing method for humans. They believe that to master the breathing technique of singing well, it is not only the control of muscles, but also the combination of words and meanings to perform muscle control with undivided attention.

One of the characteristics of "Bel Canto" is the leggings in singing. Caruso sang the ligature as if every note were connected to the second note so that it seemed to melt together. The ligature he used in the progression of minor intervals was the same as the ligature he used in the major interval, or on the same note, and no flaws were audible. This is the connection he did in the tone. In terms of pronunciation, the connection he mastered between each letter is very wonderful. That is, when each letter changes to the second letter, it goes very round and seems to be seamless. When he starts with the pronunciation, his pronunciation is very soft, but it is very powerful. He never allows the consonant to sharpen and affect the vowel. When Caruso sings, the flesh in all parts of his mouth remains natural and relaxed. Because of this, coupled with his complete breathing techniques, he can use different resonances as much as possible to achieve diverse sounds. Whether in the most simple folk songs or in opera arias, when the music changes, his voice can conform to the overtones of the musical harmony and change extremely carefully.

In terms of the range of singing repertoire, many singers are famous in history for their wonderful singing within a limited range or for their success in playing a certain role, but Caruso sings a very wide range of songs, including almost all famous operas in Italy and France. He can sing everything from lyrical to dramatic songs, from the lightest Nemolino to the strongest Othello (only recording of the latter role). He sang the realist operas written by Puccini, Mascani, Leon Cavallo, Giordano and Cirea. He also sang older plays such as "The Prophet","African Woman","Protestants","William Tell","Faust", etc., of course, the most important ones were Verdi's works.

Caruso was the first in the Bel Canto school to rise up and abolish convention. He refused to submit to the traditional singing method that made the lyrics a slave to the tone. He sang the meaning of the words themselves, expressing their feelings and meaning. He listened to the dictates of the heart more than the influence of technique, and his feelings were the only teachers of his singing.

The human voice is expressed by the joys, sorrows, sorrows and other colors in the world, which cannot be expressed by the pronunciation of a musical instrument. The sad and moving emotions in the world are Caruso's magic, and his singing penetrates into the hearts of all those lucky enough to hear it. Contemporary tenor king Pavarotti's evaluation of Caruso was quite summary. He said: "Caruso is indeed a role model, and all tenors should learn from him. His voice is unmatched in the world. He has always maintained a clear and mellow tone. Not only that, his extraordinary phrasing and incredible musical passion made him more exposed to the true meaning of music than anyone, and no one can compare with him.』

Caruso died on August 2, 1921 in Sorrento at the age of 48.
