On this day, 125 years ago, on August 7, 1900 (July 13, 1900 in the lunar calendar), German workers 'movement activist Wilhelm Liebknecht passed away. William Liebknecht, activist of the German and international workers 'movement, leader of the German Social Democratic Party, and one of the founders of the Second International. Born on March 29, 1826, into a family of officials and scholars in Giessen, he died on August 7, 1900 in Berlin. In September 1848, he led a democratic team from Switzerland to Baden, declared an uprising and established a "Provisional Government of the Republic." He failed and was arrested. In May of the following year, he participated in the uprising to defend the imperial constitution in Baden and later went into exile in Switzerland. In 1850, he was elected chairman of the German Workers 'Association in Geneva. He was arrested by the Swiss authorities, detained for two months, and then deported from the country. He then lived in London for 12 years. With the help of K. Marx and F. Engels, he actively participated in the work of the Communist League and the German Workers 'Education Association in London. He returned to Germany in August 1862. In September 1863, he joined the All-German Workers 'Federation established by F. Lassalle. In 1866, he founded the Saxon People's Party with Bebel and joined the First International. In August 1869, together with Bebel, a congress of the German Advanced Workers 'Organization was held in Eisenach to establish the German Social Democratic Labour Party (Eisenach) in accordance with the principles of the First International. During the Franco-Prussian War, he opposed O.von Bismarck's aggressive war from the parliamentary pulpit and firmly supported the Paris Commune. He was arrested and imprisoned by the authorities on charges of "treason." From 1874 to 1900, he was elected to the National Assembly of Germany. In May 1875, a conference on the merger of the Eisenach and Lassalite groups was held in Gotha. It adopted a program full of Lassalite views, which was criticized by Marx and Engels. In October 1876, he served as editor-in-chief of the "Forward", the official newspaper of the German Socialist Workers 'Party, and resolutely resisted the Lassalite faction. In October 1878, Bismarck promulgated the Act to suppress attempts by the Social Democrats to endanger the peace (the Anti-Socialists Act). Liebknecht adopted a strategy of combining legal struggle with secret struggle to lead the whole party in the struggle against extraordinary laws. In 1890 and 1891, he presided over the party's Haller Congress and Erfurt Congress and formulated a new party platform. Liebknecht was one of the founders and leaders of the Second International. At the founding conference of the Second International in July 1889, he was one of the executive chairmen of the conference. At the two subsequent congresses, there were calls for opposition to militarism and anarchism. In his later years, he made important contributions in opposing E. Bernstein's revisionism.
